Tree was planted too close to house and allowed to form double leaders (trunks) Clients enjoy the privacy and leafy feel the tree provides but also desire the light and view beyond the tree.

Options: 1 - Removal - Not an option for the client. 2 - Crown thinning - Tree will still grow too large and foliage is too close to house to make an appreciable difference. 3 - Light crown reduction - 25% reduction will force growth from ends of cuts causing tree to grow quicker, larger and more dense then normal. (No view or light gained). 4 - Major crown reduction - Light, view and a balanced tree is the result. Also, double leaders are rendered safe from splitting apart because of reduced leverage weight. - But, tree will still sprout vigorous regrowth (but from a lower frame) requiring regular future maintenance to control size. Late summer photos yet to come.

Client originally wanted to remove large multi trunked Feijoa tree as it was growing too large and dominating the garden scape. Correct and gradual removal (over a 2-3 year period) of outer trunks and the thinning and pruning back of canopy forces new shoots to grow. Trimming the softer shoots annually maintains its compact/ornamental shape and eliminates the risk of borer, rot or disease entering the tree.

Street tree planted in cul de sac 4 houses from where I live.... Thought I'd prune spring growth before neighbours took to it!!

Sides should slope back to allow light onto lower hedge and to reduce width at the top for easier trimming.

Ultimately the wrong trees for the location. Customer requires privacy, shape and light. Options: 1 - Remove and replant with appropriate species that lend toward size management. 2 - Compromise trees by hard pruning. Result : Very high maintenance and borer infestation. Had trees been appropriate or at least properly managed when younger, less compromise and easier, healthier and better looking trees would be the result. Late summer photos yet to come.
